The therapist has tattoos on her arms and is looking down, while the woman appears relaxed with her eyes closed. The room has medical decorations, including a visual chart of the human body, and art on the walls. There is a black chalkboard with writing, a standing lamp, and medical equipment in the background.

Usui Shiki Ryoho is a healing method known as Reiki in the West. Reiki, meaning Universal Life Energy (Ki), is a form of energy healing. The concept behind Usui Shiki Ryoho is based on the idea that everything in the universe is composed of energy, and that this energy can be harnessed and directed by an attuned practitioner to promote healing and balance.

What is Reiki?

I was attuned to the First Degree of Reiki by Reiki Master Courtney Besser in 2024 and to the Second Degree by Reiki Master Katherine Sietos in 2025. I have since maintained my practice on myself, friends, and family, as well as on clients. I was really drawn to Reiki when I started transitioning. I felt a huge shift in my energy and focus and Reiki was a huge help in feeling more grounded and connected with myself.

While the body has hundreds of chakras, the main 7 (crown, third eye, throat, heart, solar, sacral, and root) are areas that have energy directed towards them to help with balancing and activation. Reiki often has a feeling similar to an enhanced meditation. One may feel deep relaxation and sensations in the body such as heat, cold, pressure, and tingling over different areas.

This is a practice performed without touch and/or with light touch, lying down or seated. I also incorporate sound healing through tuning forks during the session. Clients are welcome to be clothed or unclothed during the session depending on comfort level. Since we are not working directly on the tissue as we would in a massage, undressing is not necessary, but welcome if it helps in relaxing or calming the mind and body.

Reiki can be performed on anyone and is a great way to support the body’s natural healing. It supports sleep, anxiety, depression, and PTSD, and relaxes the nervous system. Reiki can also help connect one’s mind and spirituality. Reiki is practiced with an intentional focus on healing the past and setting intention for the future.

During pregnancy, Reiki reduces stress, relaxes the mind and body, and allows space to set an intention for the upcoming birth. This helps preparation for labor, but also directing energy and intention towards the growth of the baby and their future.

Additionally, during the postpartum time, Reiki heals the mental and physical trauma from birth. It connects the mind back to the body, and helps process what has been lost in the transition into motherhood. Postpartum Reiki sessions also focus on sending energy towards healing and the future self.

In the same sense, when trying to conceive, or with a miscarriage, Reiki can help to heal the grief and emotional pain involved, and direct energy and intention towards the present and future.
